Rangers could use a defenseman as a winger tonight

7:30PM: Brendan Smith has started the game on the fourth line with Steven Fogarty and Tim Gettinger.  (MSG)

6:45PM: The Rangers are going with 11 forwards and seven defensemen for tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

David Quinn said that he envisions a defensemen playing forward at times tonight, and said “we have a lot of faith in the guys we have in our lineup and we are confident that if we do the things we have been doing and build on the direction we have going we will have success. Ideally you would like 12 forwards but we don’t have that right now.”

Quinn said that the Rangers have a couple of defensemen who have played forward before and “you might see one of them up there tonight.”

When asked if Tony DeAngelo would be one of them, Quinn said no, laughed, and added “we will see.”

When he was asked about how the seven defensemen would be deployed, Quinn said “seven defensemen will be dressed, it doesn’t mean they will all play defense.”

He added that it’s still on the table for the Rangers to call someone up before Saturday’s game in Montreal.

Henrik Lundqvist will start tonight but Quinn said that they haven’t settled on a plan for the weekend.
