Zibanejad scores shootout winner to lift Rangers 2-1 over Philly (Updates)

10:31PM: David Quinn spoke after the game and said (NYR Game Notes):

  • Did the team raise their game, “I thought in the third period we did, I certainly didn’t like our second period. Leading into the first, all the way to the two-minute mark of the first period it was a pretty even game and I thought they had a little barrage at the end of the first and they carried that momentum over and took it to us in the second period. I didn’t like anything about our second period other than our goalie. I thought we responded well and I think that is a good sign, good sign when we can shake off a bad period and come out and have a good third period.”
  • Are you comfortable with your goaltending, “yes. I was comfortable with our goaltending coming into the season.”
  • On Lias Andersson, “I thought it was his best game of the preseason. I liked his game in a lot of ways. He has been going in that direction. We’ve all talked about how he changed his body and commitment. He got into the shape he is in and it showed tonight.”
  • On Andersson defensively, “he’s getting better defensively 5-on-5 and I’ve liked his penalty killing.”
  • On DeAngelo, “I thought Tony played very well tonight. He defended well, made good passes. I liked a lot about Tony tonight.”
  • Will DeAngelo play Saturday, “for his sake I think he should play Saturday but we haven’t come to any conclusion yet.”
  • On Kravtsov, “I’ve liked his progression and he’s come a long way since Traverse City, he’s gotten better and better in the preseason. He’s played a lot of hockey, I thought tonight was just an okay night for him. There is a lot to like about him, not just what you see from his skill standpoint. He certainly seems willing and able to do all the things that he has probably never had to do. I get the feeling that when he doesn’t get the puck deep, it bothers him or when he misses a defensive zone responsibility, it bothers him. A lot of guys his age don’t really think of those things and I like that those seem to be a priority for him right now. You add that and his skill and you have a chance to be a very good player.”
  • On OT, “3 on 3 I thought we did a good job, had some chances, we had more zone time than them but then we took a penalty. You want to talk about a nutsy performance by Smith, Brady and Mika sucking it up for that 4 on 3 for that extended period of time, that was a pretty ballsy effort by those guys to hang in there and fight through being tired and getting the puck out and off the ice.”

Adam Rotter:

  • Henrik Lundqvist is ready for the season. He looks calm in net, is making the necessary saves and has looked very strong in the periods following his first of the preseason against the Devils. It’s not right to make statements based on a small sample size, especially in the preseason, but this is the Lundqvist the Rangers need if they want to challenge for a playoff spot. Again, it’s only preseason, but what we are seeing from Henrik is encouraging.
  • The Rangers have a tough decision to make with Vitali Kravtsov. I think he can play in the NHL and at times he looks like he should make the team, but I also think he’s still a little raw and could use time in Hartford similar to Filip Chytil, minus the first two games, two-years ago. The question is whether he’s better playing top-line minutes in Hartford or bottom six minutes in the NHL but being around Artemi Panarin and Pavel Buchnevich?
  • I think Lias Andersson has earned his spot on the roster, it’s just a matter of him centering the third or fourth line. Ryan Strome should open the season as the second line center and then there is Filip Chytil.
  • Chytil is either a winger, probably on the third-line, or he’s the first-line center in Hartford. He very much looks like someone who is trying to do too much and probably putting too much pressure on himself. He has only just turned 20, so going to Hartford isn’t the end of the world and likely just a slight bump in the road toward him finding his way with the Ranger down the line this season.
