David Quinn on offensive depth, the second line and more

David Quinn met with the media on Monday and said (NYR):

What was better from Game 1 to Game 2, “our puck support clearly was much better, we did a much better job of giving our defensemen outs. We played faster, we were better in our own end, I still think there is more offense there for us, we need to do a better job of creating offense through our lineup but it was a big step in the right direction.”

On getting the rest of the lineup to produce, “if you are gonna have success consistently in this league, or any league, your forwards have to be productive, not just the top scorers. We’ve got guys that are proven scorers and have done it at this level on the other three lines and they have to be more productive offensively. We have faith that they are going to do that, we have to be quicker off walls, beat people to the middle of the rink. We have to shoot more pucks, I said it all of last year, we have to shoot more pucks. If we do that we will get people turned around and create offense that way but it’s almost like we won’t shoot a puck unless we think we are going to score or we have an opportunity to beat someone to the net and we slow up a little bit, we just have to play faster in the offensive zone.”

Are you worried about the team relying too much on the top line, “no, I want them to score at the pace they are scoring at but I’d like to add more to it with the other three lines. It’s two games and I feel like we will.”

On the second line, “I thought they were a little bit better but we need more out of them, we need more out of all three of those lines.”

On Ryan Strome, “I thought he got better but again, it’s not just one guy, it’s all three guys.”

On this break coming after a good start, “the one thing we talked about going into the other night was that we were going to have to live with our effort and result for the next week and this week would be a lot longer if we didn’t have the success we had in those two games. One of the things we talked about was that if we have the effort we want to have, the result will take care of itself and I thought we did that.”

On Howden or Andersson going to the second line, “I thought both had much better nights the second night and without question that is on the table, if their play warrants it they will certainly get that chance but was happy with the way both played on Saturday night.”
