2019-20 Rangers

Updates from the Rangers prior to the Caps game

6:03PM: David Quinn spoke in Washington and said (NYR):

  • What do you take from last night, “I thought we did a lot of good things last night, we just didn’t do them enough or sustain it for 60 minutes. I liked a lot of our game, way more energetic, our pace was good, established some sort of forecheck and I thought we got more pucks to the net, we just didn’t do it consistently enough and long enough and we will have to do that a lot longer tonight.”
  • On the PP, “I thought in the Edmonton game we had a good PP and were 0-4, that can happen, you look good but don’t get a goal. Last night I felt there was a level of frustration that crept in that was one of the main reasons we didn’t have the success we are capable of having. It’s the first time that unit has faced any adversity, we got in our own way more than anything on our PP and we can’t have that happen tonight.”
  • On lineup changes, “yea, Kreider will play with Zibanejad and Panarin and Buchnevich will go to the LW with Howden and Kakko. Lemieux will be with Fast and Haley will be with Andersson and Smith.”
  • Kreider on the left or right, “right.”
  • On the top-two line changes, “we’ve been thinking about it a little bit, just think it’s something that might get some people going. You are looking for chemistry with lines and I think that Kreider up on the top line might give those guys a different look than they have had with Buchie.”
  • On Kakko getting time with the 1st PP unit, “yea, there has been thought to a lot of different looks but you don’t want to panic, it’s only been two games. In one game that we didn’t score I thought we looked pretty damn good on the PP.”
  • PP units are the same, “yes.”
  • Do you want more physicality and less east/west, “for sure, I’ve said this a lot to our team but the only way you can go east/west is if you go north. The best way to go east/west is when you’ve established that you are going to attack north with pace and that gives you some space east/west. If you are thinking of just playing east/west you are in trouble, first and foremost we have to identify that we want to go north and once we establish that we can go east/west but, again, there were a lot of things I liked in our game last night, we just didn’t do them enough.”
  • Why have you made changes, “well Lemieux didn’t play last night, so that led to a change. We have some preseason and practices and we’ve been thinking about making some of these moves not for any reason other than we have a lot of new faces and you try to find chemistry and it’s not like we have 12 forwards that have been here for 3-4 years, just hunches and wanting to see how things play out.”

5:45PM: The Rangers will start tonight’s game against the Capitals with the following lines (Stephenson):

  • Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider
  • Pavel Buchnevich, Ryan Strome, Kaapo Kakko
  • Brendan Lemieux, Ryan Strome, Jesper Fast
  • Micheal Haley, Lias Andersson, Brendan Smith

Greg McKegg is a healthy scratch. (Cyrgalis)
