David Quinn spoke after the game and said (NYR Game Notes):

  • On the game, “I liked our first 15-minutes, as the game was progressing I felt that this is how we had to do it if we are going to have success against them. We limited their chances, if any, their PP is dangerous, they got chances on the PP, we went up 1-0 and then, as has happened through this short season when we get some goals, all the sudden our whole mindset tends to change. We just have to continue focus on playing the right way and being committed to playing defense. We get very sloppy, pond hockeyish, when you trade chances with a team like that, rarely are we ever gonna get a point. Hopefully it’s a learning opportunity for us and continue to get better and grow. We can’t give these many chances, the breakaways, I thought we had bottled things down the last few games and gave up limited scoring chances. We got off to a good start today but it didn’t last long enough. We are fortunate to get a point and I’m sure coach Quenneville would like to limit the chances we got too. It was a Saturday afternoon shootout at the OK corral.
  • On Kakko in the shootout, “I like that he scored. I was feeling pretty good about his chances. He’s played in a lot of big games for a kid his age, I don’t think the spotlight gets to him, that he feels added pressure. With his skillset, that is a moment for him and he certainly took advantage of it.”
  • On the defensemen overall, “I thought there were some solid performances but the area we need to focus on is our team defense. With that comes puck management, puck control. I thought that as the game went on we got way too cute, there wasn’t an attack mode in our game coming through the neutral zone, way too east/west. We were slowing up to make plays and you just can’t do it at this level. That can be a lot of our problems when we are giving up chances, it’s not so much the D-zone coverage, it’s the puck management, turning pucks over in the offensive zone. We didn’t make them defend a lot in the second period, when we’d get into the offensive zone and try to make a play that wasn’t there and we go back. There are a lot of pieces to being sound defensively and puck management is certainly a big piece of it.”
  • On Lias Andersson, “It was the flow of the game more than anything, we killed the penalty and I think that line only played two shifts.”
  • Does Lias need more ice time, “he has to earn more ice time.”
  • Has goaltending covered up some of the defensive issues, “Yes, I think our goaltending has covered some of our flaws. We have a young team and all of these guys have established themselves in their careers as scorers and we have guys that fancy themselves as offensive players and when you get to this level and try to prove that you can play in this league, you have a mentality that that is how you are going to do it and in-turn, you neglect the areas that will really keep you here consistently and turn you into a winning hockey player at this level. That is something we have to continue to work on and challenge our players daily.”
  • On Ryan Lindgren, “it was a heck of a shot, for sure, I’ve just seen a level of confidence that he didn’t have last year. He’s in great shape, a little bit leaner and quicker. The thing that I’ve really liked about his game is his escapability below the tops of the cricles in our end. He’s done a great job on breakouts, losing the first forechecker, making a good pass. He’s very decisive in what he does. He’s really come on in the last six months.

Adam Rotter:

  • All of the goals cover it a bit, but this was sort of like the Ottawa game all over again. The Panthers are miles better than the Senators, but the Rangers had a good start, got the first goal but then they get sloppy, give up chances and turn a good start to the game into a 2-1 deficit.
  • The difference between that game and this game was that the Rangers were able to counter, tie the game and then get into a back and forth with goals and chances all over.
  • This Rangers team is better than the Rangers team in October and you hope that the Rangers at Thanksgiving are better than this team and on and on. Their progress won’t come in a straight line but hopefully they can follow up this game, where they did get a point, the way they’ve followed up their recent losses.
