Adam Rotter:

  • This was certainly a better performance than Toronto, but it still wasn’t close to a 60-minute performance.
  • Igor Shesterkin didn’t necessarily need to steal this game as he did against the Leafs, but he was still excellent and has only allowed three goals in the past three games. The Rangers should ride him until he loses.
  • For a while it seemed like the lack of success on the PP was going to cost the Rangers this game, but they found a way to overcome that and get the one goal they needed to win.
  • Sammy Blais continues to show he is much more than a guy who can throw and take hits. That pass he made to Alexis Lafreniere on the winner was something else. He has really soft hands, good control around the net and some nice offensive instincts. He definitely looks like someone that could fit in the top nine.
  • The Lafreniere, Chytil, Blais line is very interesting. It was one game, but they worked well together. The idea is obviously to have Lafreniere on the top line with Zibanejad and Kreider, but I wonder if Gerard Gallant would consider Lafreniere on the third line with Chytil and Blais, move Kreider back to the left and probably put Barclay Goodrow next to them. Everyone needs to get healthy before that could happen, but it will be an interesting thing to consider if that line continues to play well.
  • The newly formed top line with Panarin joining Zibanejad and Kreider certainly had moments and chances, but they kept finding the post and the side of the net. Hopefully by early next week the Rangers can get Strome and Kakko back and get everyone slotted back where they were supposed to be.
  • So it’s three in a row and a trip to Ottawa to close out the road trip.
