2022 New York Rangers Playoffs

What Gerard Gallant said after Game 5

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the Rangers win over Pittsburgh in Game 5 and said (MSG):

  • On the team, “they were competitive as hell tonight and that is what we wanted from them. Be competitve and try to win the 1-on-1 battles and we played hard. Down 2-0 but we still played hard the whole time and we battled back and once we got the first goal it was a big boost for our club.”

  • How confident were you, “I felt real confident about today. You need to take it one game at a time when you are behind 3 games to 1 and today I felt really good about our team and our group. I knew our effort was going to be there, I couldn’t say coming to the rink that we were going to win the game for sure, but I felt real good about our group today.”
  • On Ryan Lindgren playing through injury, “that is what he is, a character guy. He plays hurt, plays all the time and I don’t know how many minutes he played tonight, but it seemed like he was on the ice all night and just one of those guys who makes other people around him better.”
  • Did you go with 7 D as insurance for Lindgren, “obviously that was the reason.”
  • On Lindgren, “he just keeps going and battles and we had a pretty good idea that he was going to be fine for the game, we just wanted to make sure. I didn’t want to be caught with only five defensemen if he had to leave. He was fine and battled hard and competed hard and did all the right things.”
  • On the Chytil, Lafreniere, Kakko line, “they played good, they played good all series long. They were exciting, but I thought everybody played well tonight and did their jobs to a tee and that is what we have to do to win.”
  • On killing the 5-on-3 early in the first period, “Yea that was a big part of the game obviously. The two calls, they were both penalties and you hate to get behind the eight ball like that in a game that we have to win and they did an outstanding job killing that penalty and that was a big part of the game for us, no doubt.”
  • On Crosby leaving the game, “He’s one of the best players in the World. They still had some good chances, created a lot, but he’s a great player and hopefully he’s okay.”
  • On Shesterkin, “he made some real key saves. A little boo-boo on one of the goals when he tried to make a little pass, but that is what happens, he battles and plays the puck real well and he makes up for that.”
  • On getting more offensive zone time as a priority, “it’s been since the first of the year (laugh). It was good, we set pucks behind the net and tried to get more pucks in the crease area and battled and I think that, to me, was the biggest difference in our game tonight. We went to those places where it’s not easy and did a real good job.”
  •  Do you believe momentum changes from game to game, “it’s all over the league. You watch games different nights and momentum swings from game to game. Now we gotta get ready and we played real hard tonight and well and now we gotta go back and hopefully get another big game in Pittsburgh and give ourselves a chance for a Game 7 here, but there is a lot of work to do.”
  • What did you like about protecting the lead in the third, “We didn’t hold back and try to protect the lead, we just kept playing the game. They are a good team and created some good offensive chances and Shesterkin made some big saves and we battled right to the end.”
  • Did you see the team trying to shoot more, “that is exactly, it’s a positive. When they are blocking as many shots as they did and playing in their D-zone, like I said, I’d like to get more pucks through, but it’s not an easy game when people compete and battle and that is exactly what that team did. Pittsburgh is a team with a lot of character and they won in the past because they did stuff like that.”
  • But the team got the message to shoot, “definitely, 100%.”
  • On Lafreniere’s emotion after scoring, “he scored a huge goal and his emotion in the game carries over and the home crowd that we have, it’s special. I think he tied it up, did he not? The tying goal, it carried us over and we scored shortly after that again. Emotion is a big part of our game and when you see the emotion for the first shift of the game carry on through the game, for the most part, that is what we are all about.”
  • What were you saying after the Pens tied it right back up, “We were down 2-0 a short time before that, so I guess I’d take the 3-3 goal and a tie game after two periods. It’s definitely discouraging a little bit when they get a goal that quick, but we felt good about our game and in-between periods we felt we were the better team and that it was going to work out for us.”
