Stats:

Adam Rotter:

  • Another relatively lousy performance for the Rangers. They had their moments, they had some shots and possessed the puck, but Columbus got saves early and then their D was in every lane, blocked every shot and shut them down.
  • They didn’t get any help from Jaro Halak who definitely wants the second one back, probably wants the third one back and didn’t get a ton of help on the fourth and fifth goals, but by then the game already seemed out of hand with how Columbus was defending.
  • They looked frustrated and kept trying to force plays and passes that weren’t there or when opportunities were there, they went off skates or were flubbed. Offensively they just seemed out of sync and look far from the team that started the first two games of the season playing fast and with a sort of relentless flow to their game.
  • Losing Filip Chytil certainly hurt and immediately turns the third line from one that could produce offensively to one that likely can’t. That also hurt Vitali Kravtsov’s return and look out someone that the Rangers are hoping he can develop chemistry with. It’s hard to grade Kravtsov since he didn’t get to play with Chytil, but I thought he was fine, noticeable at times.
  • Next up is a back-to-back with Colorado and then the Isles. Those should be good tests for this team and hopefully bring the kind of energy and speed to their game that they had against Tampa and mostly against Minnesota.
