Stats:

Adam Rotter:

  • The Rangers played well tonight and deserved the the win. Unlike the last number of games they didn’t start slow, they weren’t caved in terribly, got goals from players throughout the lineup and found a way not just to win, but found a way not to lose.
  • The Rangers looked so tentative in that OT, just cycling the puck back toward the red line and back into their own zone to maintain possession. They looked like they were either waiting for one of the Bruins to fall down, fall asleep or just play for the shootout. When Matthew Robertson had the puck on a rush he did the one thing that the Rangers don’t do enough and he went to the net…and scored.
  • Robertson will be an interesting guy to monitor going forward. He’s big, skates pretty well and is young. With Carson Soucy going to the Islanders and not a lot of defensive depth, he’s going to get a lot more runway and bigger minutes through the rest of the season. He put in his time with Hartford and maybe he’s a late bloomer. Or maybe he’s a 7th/8th defenseman that just looks better because the Rangers have no one else. But he’s earned his spot right now and hopefully he can continue to progress through the rest of the season.
  • The pass that Gabe Perreault made to JT Miller on Miller’s goal was why there is a lot of excitement around Perreault. He looks so much more comfortable and confident when he has the puck now. He doesn’t seem overwhelmed in that top-six role and it will be interesting to see how much more his role evolves, especially on the PP, when Artemi Panarin is ultimately traded. I’d still prefer, for now, that Alexis Lafreniere get that spot on the PP, and away from the front of the net, but it’s not hard to see Perreault replacing Panarin when that time comes. If Vincent Trocheck also moves then they both can step onto PP1.
  • It’s just nice to win and to do so with some of the guys they are moving forward with, Miller/Perreault/Cuylle/probably Will Borgen and someone in Matthew Robertson who will get the opportunity to show he can be someone they move forward with, leading the way.
  • Next up is a home and home with the Islanders and a chance to see Carson Soucy again.
