What Gerard Gallant said after the win over NJ

Gerard Gallant met with the media on MSG following the Rangers win over New Jersey and said (MSG, NYR):

  • On Shesterkin, “He’s been unbelievable, I mean seriously? How many Grade A chances, rush chances they got, Grade A chances, breakaways, he’s unbelievable.”
  • On Shesterkin needing to , “too many nights.”
  •  “I’m over exaggerating, it’s not that often, but it’s more times than I’d like. They create a lot of chances, they are a good team, but some of their chances were created by our stuff. I didn’t like how we played in the neutral zone at all.”
  • “I just thought we could have been better in a lot of areas. That is the biggest thing for me. They created stuff, their PP looked really good, their young kids were moving the puck good, I think we looked flat at times and then we looked pretty good at times. I hate to critique a in, but I know we can be better than that and Shesty was outstanding.”
  • “Not on the bench, I don’t, when I get home on the bench and watch it I’ll probably say ‘yea,’ but it didn’t feel like that tonight, it wasn’t the same feeling as the Washington or Pittsburgh game, even though we lost that, it wasn’t the same feeling. We are going to have some games like that, I just thought we could have been a lot better.”
  • On the consistency between Kreider and Zibanejad, “it’s huge, they are top players, score big goals at the right time and sometimes when you are frustrated a little bit and the game isn’t going your way, they make the big plays and that is what they do for us.”
  • On Chytil, “he played well, I just want him, like I said, to play like Mika, that style of hockey, work hard at both ends, be a good player, make yourself noticeable on the ice. I don’t care about him scoring, it’s nice when he scores, but I want to notice him on the ice and I notice Mika almost every shift he is on the ice because he works both ends and does all the little things.”
  • On Greg McKegg not playing, “he was sick.”

5:35PM: Gerard Gallant said after practice (NYR):

  • Do you have an update on Rooney, “Week-to-week. I don’t know much right now, to be honest with you, but it’s definitely week-to-week.”
  • Is Kakko getting close to being able to skate, “He’s getting closer. He’s still ways away, it’s going to be another few weeks for sure. I don’t have a date, the first time I said to you probably four weeks, but it’s going to be more than that.”
  • Do you think he will be back after the trade deadline, “What is that? 3 weeks away? Hopefully just before, but I’m not sure. It’s another two weeks for sure, I know that.”

Chytil will return tomorrow and other updates from Tuesday

Filip Chytil will return to the lineup tomorrow after missing one game with an illness and the past two games as a healthy scratch. (NYR)

Gerard Gallant met with the media following practice and said (NYR):

  • On chemistry between Kreider, Zibanejad and Lafreniere, “When they are scoring goals and playing good two-way hockey. I think they’ve played really well, obviously the line has been great all year long. I don’t worry about those guys too much, to be honest with you, they take care of themsevles, veteran players him and Kreider and Laffy now. They keep playing well and doing the right things, but they play a 200ft game and that is what is important for them.”
