Shesterkin in net, Lafreniere & Miller debut as Rangers open against Isles

6:38PM: Kevin Rooney, not Phil Di Giuseppe will play on the fourth line.

3:34PM: Some of what David Quinn said before tonight’s game (NYR):

  • On using Buchnevich and Kreider on the PK, “one of the things I think we have done is be shorthanded from a PK standpoint and to me, if you have an opportunity to pressure and have a PK that can get after people and pressure, you’re going to need more people doing it. Buchnevich had killed a lot of penalties when he played in Russia. We’ve been thinking about using Kreider forever, since we’ve been here, and every time we do it, if something doesn’t go well in the first shift or two, we stop doing it. We are committed to letting it work with Chris, regardless, from a mistake standpoint, that is how he’s going to learn and we’ve got to give him an opportunity to learn on the go and use his speed to his advantage, because I know that if I was a defenseman and I got Chris Kreider coming out at me at the blue line, I’m going to be a little nervous knowing the kind of speed he has. It’s just trying to find ways to get more people involved and be more aggressive and be in people’s faces on the PK.”

Igor Shesterkin to start, new alternate captains and more

6:28PM: In a Q&A session, John Davidson said the following about having/not having a captain:

  • “My belief, and I can speak from experience as a player -was with some great captains, as a person in management I’ve been with organizations that didn’t have a captain for a long period of time. The biggest key is to get the right guy, not to be shortsighted and just give it to somebody with seniority or someone along those lines. If you feel that your club has collective leadership and hand out three “A”s and not worry about the “C.” If you make a mistake by giving the “C” to someone, it’s not a healthy situation. You’ve got to make sure and take your time. It’s not an emergency to fill that role, there have been lots of teams that have done well without having a Captain. We will continue to assess this thing, one day it’s going to pop and ‘this person is the person.’ We have guys, with others gone on, we have guys that are going to pop all over the place. I’m satisfied with where we are, I think it will take care of itself in time.”

Braden Schneider could be playing with Hartford until the WHL starts

12:38PM: Rangers first round pick Braden Schneider has signed an AHL-only contract for this season, according to Elliotte Friedman. (Sportsnet)

Friedman notes that Schneider will be able to play in Hartford until the WHL begins playing. (Sportsnet)

  • The AHL is planning to begin their season on Feb 5 and the WHL announced a plan to play a 24-game season, though no start date has been confirmed.

Schneider still has junior eligibility left and, in normal circumstances, would only be able to play in the WHL or NHL.

Larry Brooks wrote recently in the NY Post that the Rangers made an attempt to get Schneider signed to his entry-level contract prior to December 31 to prevent a “contract slide,” but were unable to do so.

Schneider is not eligible to play for the Rangers this season and will not be eligible to sign his entry-level contract until March. (NY Post)

Neither the Rangers or Wolf Pack have announced Schneider’s AHL deal.

Updates on waivers, the Rangers training camp roster and more

7PM: David Quinn spoke after practice earlier today and said (MSG):

  • Is the group from practice the roster, “yea, right now that is what our roster will look like come Thursday night.”
  • On Mika and potential post-Covid issues, “we’ve talked quite a bit, actually, since he was diagnosed. He felt pretty good today, it’s really a day-to-day situation, you just don’t know how you are going to respond. The good news is that he’s gotten better and better over the last 4-5 days as he started some light activity. We are not sure what is going to happen tomorrow, or Wednesday or Thursday, but talking to him after practice and about where he is at and how he felt.”
