What David Quinn said after the loss to Pitt

Rangers coach David Quinn met with the media on MSG following the loss to Pittsburgh and said:

  • On the game, “I thought it was towards the end of the second, it’s part of our learning curve, we have to understand situational hockey. You are up 3-1 and a lot of good things are happening and we just didn’t understand the moment and with six minutes to go we are doing things like we are down 3-1. It came back and bit us. Our third period, I thought we did good things too, but that is a good team and they pushed back, disappointed that we gave up that PP goal at the end of the second, it’s just part of our learning curve and we have to understand that when we are up 3-1, there is a certain way to play and we certainly didn’t do that tonight.”

  • On K’Andre Miller, “it’s certainly been a smooth transition for him so far. I just loved the way he played today, his gaps were good, he was physical, confident with the puck, just a lot of good things out of his game today. He wasn’t afraid, regardless of who was out there, whether it was Malkin or Crosby or whoever, he was playing hockey and it was nice to see a kid that age play with that type of swagger.”
  • On Ryan Strome, “I thought he was better tonight. He had some chances tonight and that was more than the first-three combined, so that is what you are looking for. The goals will come and the points will come, I thought he had a better night tonight, I thought he was certainly more engaged and involved and once we have that going consistently, that line will be more productive.”
  • On Phil Di Giuseppe, “I thought he had a really good night, his best game since I’ve been here, he played with a pace, practical, physical, relentless on pucks, that is what he’s going to have to do if he is going to be in our lineup consistently and he certainly has done that to start the season.”
  • On DeAngelo in the shootout, “the three guys we chose have a great track record, Chytil was certainly next on deck.”
  • Is this the best you have seen Kakko and Chytil, “I do, both are going out there with a little more confidence, being more responsible in all three zone. I just like the look of that line, I think Phil gives them a bit more of a veteran and practical approach. I just like what I see out of that line.” (NYR)
  • On Alexis Lafreniere and being on the Kreider/Mika line, “I thought that line had some good moments. Alexis continues to do good things and he will continue to get better. It’s game four into his NHL career, I just love his passion and enthusiasm, before the third period, he and Kreider are talking about him getting his first point. I just like a lot of the things that he does and he is learning on the go and that is not easy to do in this league and it’s fun to continue to watch him work at his game and very coachable and wants to learn, a lot of good things coming out of him.”  (NYR)
