Brendan Smith signed a one-year deal with Carolina for $800,000.

Smith joins newly signed Tony DeAngelo, Brady Skjei and Jesper Fast as former Rangers now with the Hurricanes.

Adam Rotter: Brendan Smith was never as good as he was in the stretch right after he was acquired in 2017. He signed a four-year deal, was sent to Hartford and then turned into a utility player that David Quinn used at forward and then with pretty much every defenseman. He was a guy that always gave a good effort, sometimes tried to do too much and got caught out of position and somehow managed to avoid being traded or bought out the last few years. I wouldn’t have minded him coming back on this kind of one-year deal at the seventh defenseman, but the Rangers went out and signed Jarred Tinordi to beat people up.
