The latest on Adam Fox’s potential contract extension

10/21/21 | LeBrun writes about Fox in The Athletic and says that his “sense” is that Chris Drury has made it known that the Rangers want to sign Fox long term and that Fox wants to be a Ranger for “a very long time.”

10/19/21 | On TSN’s Insider Trading Pierre LeBrun spoke about Adam Fox’s possible next contract.

LeBrun said “A guy to keep an eye on this season is Adam Fox, the guy who just won the Norris Trophy and he’s up at the end of the year coming out of his entry level deal and, guess what? His camp will be looking for a contract that starts with a 9.”

He continued, “I’m told that there have been very preliminary discussions, very preliminary, nothing serious in nature yet. The thing is, the Rangers have spent a lot of their cap money. Mika Zibanejad’s extension starts next year at $8.5, Panarin makes $11.6, I think they overpaid for Barclay Goodrow. So, it’s not Adam Fox that is gonna pay the price for the Rangers cap issues moving forward. Keep an eye on that situation because he is salary arbitration eligible, oh boy.”

Charlie McAvoy just signed an eight-year deal last week worth $9.5 million per season.

Adam Rotter: Maybe this is a more complicated deal than I think it is. I mean, if he is an All-Star and a Norris finalist again maybe the number for eight years is about $10 million. Cale Makar probably would have gotten over $10 million if he had gone the full eight years, but he only signed for six.

Fox is a unique case for a ton of reasons. There is the fact that he is only coming out of his entry level deal, the fact that he has already won a Norris Trophy and the fact that he only wants to be a Ranger. Then you factor in any pressure he may get from his agent or the NHLPA about raising the bar even higher for defensemen and it’s a situation where everyone knows he will be a Ranger, but the road to get there is unclear. I don’t expect this to get hammered out anytime soon, because if he happens to win the Norris Trophy again, or is a finalist, the number will only go up.
