2021-22 Trade Deadline Rangers

The Rangers were “close” on Calle Jarnkrok before he was traded to Calgary

Elliotte Friedman wrote at Sportsnet that the Rangers tried some “big swings” and were also “close” on Calle Jarnkrok before Seattle traded him to Calgary. (Sportsnet)

Calgary acquired Jarnkrok, 30, last Wednesday for a 2022 second-round pick, 2023 third-round pick, and 2024 seventh-round pick.

Seattle retained 50% of Jarnkrok’s cap hit of $2 million.

Jarnkrok had 26 points in 49 games for Seattle and 28 points in 49 games for Nashville last season.

Adam Rotter: Jarnkrok is similar to Andrew Copp and would have filled the same kind of middle-six, up and down the lineup player. It would seem like the Rangers pivoted right from Jarnkrok to Frank Vatrano since they were acquired on the same day. Vatrano cost a lot less and is a different kind of player, so Drury had options to begin upgrading at forward. Jarnkrok did make sense for the Rangers and I wonder if they still would have pursued Copp, they had the assets to get both, or gone with Vatrano, Jarnkrok and then Tyler Motte.

The funny thing about it is that for non-hockey reasons things seemed to work out nicely as Copp has a long history with Jacob Trouba, dating back to when they were 10-years old, and the Jarnkrok is cousins with Calgary’s Elias Lindholm.
