What Gerard Gallant said after the loss in Game 6

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the Rangers elimination in Game 6 and said (NYR, MSG):

  • “It’s hard right now. We played well, battled hard, had a chance to win all those games. They found a way to get the big goals at the big time. I’m proud of our guys, we battled hard and competed every night.”

  • What was said in the room after the game, “there was nothing said. We’ll talk tomorrow, they’re disappointed obviously, but there wasn’t much said.”
  • On what happened when Tampa took the lead again, “we tied the game, we were in a good spot, they went down and scored again. I don’t know what happened. They got a goal. We battled hard, came back, tied the game on the PP and they come down and get a 2-on-1 and put it in the net.”
  • On Shesterkin’s game, “like he played all season long. Great goaltender, competitor, made some big saves at key times for us and gives us a chance to win. He does his job every night. Outstanding.”
  • Do you think the 20 games in 40 days caught up to them, “I’m glad you brought it up because that is what I was thinking. No doubt it showed up and we go 7 and 7, really no breaks. I would have loved to have gotten by tonight and had two days off, that would have been the first time and awesome, but that is the way it goes. When you go 7 and 7 you don’t get much break and guys don’t get a chance to heal much. It made it tough, but we battled hard and competed hard and did the best we could.”
  • Do you think that is why the offense dried up, “definitely.”
  • Was it fatigue or Tampa’s play that caused so much trouble generating offense, “I think it’s a combination of both. They are a big, big defensive team. They make it tough on you, box you out really well and do a good job. Our forward were trying to battle to get there and it’s fatigue, no doubt in my mind.”
  • On Ryan Strome leaving the game, “he was hurting pretty good. I’ve seen it from the first shift, but he was still okay. When we pulled him at the end the trainer went down and asked him and he said there wasn’t much there. We made that decision.”
  • On the lineup changes, “I’m not gonna talk about it.”
  • On scratching Kakko, “I”m not gonna talk about it, today’s not the time right now, for me.”
  • Was that one of the best goaltending performances by a losing goalie, “I thought Igor was outstanding, he gave us a chance to win every night and we get out-chanced in a lot of games. He was outstanding and our best player all year long and did it again in this series.”
  • Did you know it was a 50/50 thing with Strome, “He started the game. I’m not going to tell you what is wrong with him. He started the game and it was fine and then it caught up to him. It was more than 50/50 or he wouldn’t have played.”
