Stats:
Adam Rotter:
- The result is what was expected and what it should be, but how the Rangers went about getting these two points was not exactly how they drew it up.
- This is a game that they should have come out and dominated, not one where they fell behind 2-0 and needed three goals in the third period to beat one of the worst teams in the league.
- The Rangers were the better team for most of the game, especially after the first few minutes, but they seemed disjointed. They had the puck a lot, but they didn’t get many great chances and needed a deflection from a third liner, Will Cuylle, to tie it, an unreal give and give PP goal between Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox and then Chris Kreider batting a rebound out of the air to give them the insurance goal.
- Will Cuylle was the big star of the third period with his goal and his drawing of the penalty that led to the Panarin goal. He’s just a solid player and having a good rookie season. He’s not flashy, but he has some skill and he’s physical.
- The lines, understandably, ended up jumbled throughout the game as Peter Laviolette was trying to spark some kind of offense. Why Kaapo Kakko got knocked to the fourth line/sometimes benched, didn’t make a ton of sense, but he was back on the top-line for Kreider’s goal.
- With how things have been going for the Rangers, especially the past two games, getting the win, no matter how they had to do it, was incredibly important. They couldn’t drop a third straight game and especially drop a third straight game and lose to a team like Anaheim. Ultimately the PP came through, they got a couple of bounces and they found a way to win.
- It wasn’t pretty, and who knows how this game turns out if Anaheim’s third goal isn’t overturned, but they needed the two points and they eventually got them.
- Like tonight, Tuesday’s game against San Jose isn’t a must-win, but it’s a game that the Rangers need to have and hopefully, they will play a better overall game and not need to rally for four goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period to win.
