10/17/25 | Friedman said on 32 Thoughts that Othmann has not asked for a trade and that the challenge will be finding a match between the Rangers and other teams over what his value us and what they get in return.
10/16/25 | Elliotte Friedman writes at Sportsnet that since Brennan Othmann was sent to Hartford in the middle of training camp that there have been “conversations with other clubs about his future.”
Friedman writes that the Rangers have “a lot” on the wings and that it “simply may be that he needs a fresh start elsewhere” and there are conversations about “the next steps of his career.”
Adam Rotter: Othmann was Chris Drury’s first pick as GM but he has yet to pan out as an NHLer. There is no doubt that it was disappointing that he didn’t make it further in camp even if he ultimately wasn’t going to make the team.
Drury has often held onto his prospects, sometimes for too long, unless he gets the price he wants. Nils Lundkvist was moved for a first round pick when Braden Schneider jumped him on the depth chart but guys like Vitali Kravtsov and Zac Jones could have been moved at different times but, especially Jones, were kept around to see if they could finally grab a full-time spot. With Othmann, he’s still so young and with potential, but Gabe Perreault has jumped ahead of him, Brett Berard is probably ahead of him now and the Rangers also don’t have many spots open on the wing, especially if Mika Zibanejad is going to be there long-term. I’d hate to give up on him now but the Rangers do need centers and if they can land a player in a similar spot in their careers that needs a change of scenery, that may make sense. I don’t think, at this point, the Rangers would get a first round pick for him in a trade and without that or a similar aged prospect coming back, it may make sense to give him one last shot. Of course, if you do that and he doesn’t succeed then you have totally torpedoed his value.
