10:20AM: The Rangers have announced the move and described his role:
“As President, Chief Operating Officer, and Alternate Governor, Quentin Dolan will assume a key role in the day-to-day Ownership responsibilities of the Rangers and its AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In this role, he will work closely on overall team direction and strategy with Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury, who will continue to manage the hockey operations of the organization and lead all hockey decision making. Quentin Dolan will report into MSG Sports Executive Chairman and CEO, James L. Dolan, who will be stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities with the Rangers, and Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury will report into Quentin Dolan.”
They also sent out the following quotes in their press release:
- James Dolan: “Since his arrival overseeing our Player Performance and Science department, Quentin has made a strong impact on the Rangers and Knicks organizations, and we are pleased that he will step into this elevated position. Quentin has quickly become an incredibly valued member of the Rangers franchise and played a key role behind the scenes with the Knicks during their championship run this past season. I look forward to seeing the positive influence he can make in this expanded and critical role.”
- Quentin Dolan: “I’ve always had a tremendous respect and admiration for the New York Rangers organization, it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m honored to have this opportunity to ensure our hockey operations staff, coaches, and players have all the support they need to provide our fans a product they can be proud of. I’m looking forward to immediately getting to work with Chris Drury, Mike Sullivan, and the entire staff.”
- Chris Drury: ““Quentin and I have worked together for several years, and I believe him taking on this role will only make the Rangers organization stronger. The front office and coaching staff will be working in unison with Quentin in all key areas of our team in an effort to put this franchise in the best position possible to compete for a Stanley Cup.”

- 23-24: Strategic Advisor to the Chairman.
MSG Sports has discussed splitting the Knicks and Rangers into separately publicly traded companies.
Adam Rotter: Other than knowing that James Dolan had sons, the first mention I can remember of Quentin was only a few weeks ago when he was the second person called up to receive a Key To the City at the Knicks Championship parade. Based on his role as a Director of MSG Sports and adviser to his father it is clear that Quentin has been groomed for this role and to the likely successor to his father. In the short-term I don’t think much of anything changes with the Rangers. Quentin has been involved, to some degree, in everything the Rangers have been doing as they try to retool and it’s not surprising that he has been building relationships with Chris Drury and Mike Sullivan.
James Dolan was famously hands off with the Rangers for many years, especially compared to his role with the Knicks, allowing Glen Sather to basically run the team as he saw fit. That obviously changed a bit when Sather stepped down as President and only a couple of years later Dolan made arguably the biggest move he ever made as owner of the Rangers when he fired John Davidson and Jeff Gorton had handed everything over to Drury. Quentin is still mostly unknown so it’s hard to gauge who he may be as a control person until he has been in the job a while, but it’s a definite change for the Rangers.
