Gord Murphy and Mike Kelly to join Gerard Gallant’s coaching staff

6:48 PM: Brooks writes that Murphy will run the defense and replace Jacques Martin. Kelly will be the “eye-in-the-sky” for two periods and then join the bench for the third, replacing Greg Brown. The next assistant hired will replace David Oliver’s responsibilities by managing the forwards and PP. (NY Post)

3:31 PM: Larry Brooks tweets that the Rangers have hired Gord Murphy and Mike Kelly as assistant coaches to Gerard Gallant.

Murphy has been with the Rangers organization for the past two seasons as an assistant to Kris Knoblauch in Hartford.

He joined the Rangers during their three game series with Carolina, after Lindy Ruff was hired by NJ, and while David Quinn and his coaching staff were out with Covid.

Murphy was also an assistant with Gallant when Gallant coached in Columbus.

Kelley has been with Gallant as an assistant dating back to when Gallant coached Saint John in the QMJHL. He was an assistant to Gallant in Florida, Vegas and with Team Canada at the World Championships.

Brooks adds that the Rangers are also seeking out a third assistant coach. (Brooks)

Benoit Allaire remains as goalie coach.

Adam Rotter: Neither of these choices are surprising. Kelly has been Gallant’s right-hand man for years and Murphy has the Gallant connection from Columbus, but he also knows the players and knows Drury.

What Gerard Gallant said about Panarin/Zibanejad, Lafreniere and more

Gerard Gallant was on SiriusXM earlier today and said:

  • What do you do to get ready for the season, “To be honest, I haven’t talked to many players, I sent a text to Adam Fox to congratulate him on winning the award. Just watching some tape, I watched that team play a lot last year, they are a good, young talented hockey team, they have some real good veterans. Hopefully, we are ready to take a step. I look at that team and it’s a good opportunity for me to go in as a coach, but I think the team is ready to take a big step. Second half of the year last year they put a real good push on and fell a little at the end, looking forward to that team, to that group and we’ll get ready. I’ll get my coaching staff in place hopefully in the next week or so and get down to work and get ready for training camp.”

2020-21 Rangers, Gerard Gallant

What Gerard Gallant said about his style, young players, the rebuild, captains and more

Gerard Gallant was on the NHL Network on Wednesday and said:

  • On coaching and systems, “there is no doubt, it’s a fine line with what you are going to do with your team. I’ve always coached pretty much the same way, but you gotta make little adjustments with your personnel, there is no doubt about that. I believe in playing a fast game of hockey, being aggressive on your forecheck. Part of the NHL is being a good traffic team and defensive team, but I think it all starts with the talented group that we’ve got, I think if we are on offense first and you work hard playing defense you will be fine. I think our group is going to play a very fast game up and down the ice, working hard at both ends of the rink and that is how you win championships, you’ve gotta play both ends of the rink, work hard, and be committed.”

Chris Drury and Gerard Gallant held a press conference on Tuesday and said (NYR):

Chris Drury Intro: “I’m very excited to formally introduce and welcome Gerard Gallant to the New York Rangers. I’m very excited to have him on board as our next head coach. At the start of this process, I was looking to find a coach who had a proven track record and success at several levels, Turk checked all of these boxes. He’s a Jack Adams Award winner and had deep playoff runs, he guided two organizations to division championships, won at the Major Junior level, and most recently at the International level. We are very fortunate to have him and excited for what is to come with him as the next Rangers head coach..”
