Kevin Hayes, Kevin Hayes Rumors

Kevin Hayes and Winnipeg eliminated in the first round

Kevin Hayes and the Winnipeg Jets have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by St. Louis 4-2.

With Winnipeg Hayes had five goals and eight assists in 20 games, averaging 15:17  per game and winning 51.6% of his faceoffs.

Hayes had two goals and an assist in their six game loss to Nashville.

The Rangers sent Hayes to Winnipeg for Winnipeg’s first round pick in 2019, Brendan Lemieux and a 2022 conditional fourth round pick that the Rangers would have received if the Jets won the Stanley Cup.

The spot of the first round pick from Winnipeg is still to be determined but will be somewhere between 16 and 22.

Hayes is a UFA on July 1.

Adam Rotter: Winnipeg was a popular pick to come out of the West based upon their size, skill and depth but they are out and the Rangers will benefit from it with a higher pick than expected. It will be interesting to see what happens with Hayes next. I think it’s possible he returns to the Rangers but that remains to be seen at this point. I think the Rangers would have a lot of interest in him coming back but only if the terms make sense.

Kevin Hayes traded to Jets for 1st rounder, Brendan Lemieux and pick

11:14AM: The Rangers have announced the trade officially and the deal is:

  • To Winnipeg: Kevin Hayes
  • To Rangers: Winnipeg 2019 1st rounder, Brendan Lemieux, Conditional 4th rounder in 2022 if Winnipeg wins the Stanley Cup

10:53AM: Hayes said on TSN, “it’s been pretty crazy, I knew I was getting traded a like a week ago. Once I said bye, it was pretty emotional. It felt like every hour I was going somewhere new. Glad to finally have it over with.”

Adam Rotter: Lemieux was someone that definitely seemed like a target for the Rangers throughout this process. He’s probably the most “Sean Avery-type” player the Rangers have had since Avery and that has the potential to bring both good and bad on the ice. He’s young, physical and brings the Rangers something they didn’t have.

I think it’s a pretty nice return for the Rangers. Maybe the conditional pick could be a little better but the Rangers will have at least two and up to four first round picks this year and get someone in Lemiuex that should step right in and make an impact.

What the Matt Duchene to Columbus deal means for the Rangers (Updates)

1:37PM: Darren Dreger tweets that there is a lot of action on Mats Zuccarello and that there have been some teams that have inquired about adding both Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes.

Adam Rotter: The Rangers need to determine what their ultimate goal is when it comes to these trades. Are they still looking to get as many picks as possible, already drafted players, NHLers, some combination of those three? My view is that they can get the most amount of assets by trading them separately but they might get the most quality asset by trading them together. The Rangers are in a good position no matter what direction they go in and if Mark Stone gets moved soon that may only increase the value of Zuccarello and Hayes more.

11:51AM: The Ottawa Senators have sent Matt Duchene to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a package believed to include prospects and picks. (Dreger)

The belief, as of now, is that the Blue Jackets will also hold onto Artemi Panarin as they look to make a playoff run. (Kypreos)
