What David Quinn said after the loss to the Panthers

David Quinn met with the media on MSG following the loss to the Panthers and said:

  • On the game, “I thought it was a lot better effort, did a lot of good things tonight but obviously our PK has to get better. We take two stupid penalties to start the game and they capitalize on them. The first one is a hell of a play, sometimes you question yourself ‘why’d we give that one up’ and the answer is that they have five and you have four, I thought that was the case on the first one. On the second one we made a bad decision. Good news is that we get a couple of days of practice, shore up our PK. We’ve given up seven in the last two games and 18 on the year. These last two games just killed us from a PK standpoint. That being said, 5 on 5 I thought we did a lot of good things, on top of them, had some great scoring chances, they have a real good hockey team and it just wasn’t enough.”
  • On Panarin, “he’s a dynamic player and really good tonight. I thought that every time he had the puck that something good was about to happen, that line was good. It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to get two points tonight because we did a lot of the things that put us in a position to get two points, at the end of the day we didn’t get it done.”
  • On how much the top line played, “there was a rhythm with those three lines, that is why did what we did. All three lines were doing good things, those are the decisions we made. We have three days off coming up so I wasn’t worried about playing four lines.”
  • On this game compared to last week’s game, “No, this was much better and I think we only gave up 15-16 scoring chances which, when you do that you should win most nights. This was a much different game even though 4-3 and 5-5 in overtime, but it was a different feel from our end of it. We played much better tonight than we did the last time we played them. It’s disappointing not getting the two points. I liked the turnaround compared to what we did in Tampa, complete 180, we skated, made plays and played hockey.”
  • On his feeling after the past two games, “I’m thinking we have to build on what we did tonight. To me, this is as good a team as there is in our conference, in a lot of ways, deep up front, good defensemen, they are a good hockey team. We have to focus on the things we are doing well and keep doing it and clean up our special teams. We clean up our special teams we will win hockey games.”
  • Why are penalties happening early, “I benched both guys that did it and it’s going to happen over and over again. You take a lazy penalty and you are going to get benched. I should have done it 16 games ago, better late than never I guess.”
