Adam Rotter:
- Another game and another one where they find a way to win. They were the second-best team for large portions of this game, had another awful first period, another game where they got better as the game went on, and, eventually, another game where they find a way to get the two points.
- These first periods are certainly an issue and they can’t blame an early morning arrival from Carolina for this one. It’s been an ongoing issue this season and it usually hasn’t come back to bite them, but it did against Carolina and is much more likely to bite them as they start playing better teams.
- I’m glad Alexis Lafreniere scored, especially after Quinton Byfield scored just before him. Lafreniere has penalties in three straight games, though the one tonight was certainly borderline, and outside of this shootout goal he hasn’t done much lately and less since coming back from Covid. The Rangers as a team don’t have the puck enough and for someone who needs the puck to be effective, and barely gets any PP time, Lafreniere doesn’t impact the game as much as he should.
- Maybe it doesn’t matter that they are really slow to start games, maybe it doesn’t matter if they get outshot and never sustain offense at 5-on-5 and maybe it doesn’t matter if they win because of special teams and goaltending. I just think that this team should be able to play close to a 60-minute game, score at 5-on-5, score, start well, score early and then build on and defend leads.
- Next up is a back-to-back that sees the Rangers go to Columbus on Thursday and then return home on Friday to retire Henrik Lundqvist’s number.
