12/1/21 | Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post that Chris Drury has begun “to engage in talks aimed at maintaining the Strome-Artemi Panarin connection well beyond this season.”
11/20/21 | The NY Post reports that there have been no talks with Ryan Strome about a potential contract extension and “there isn’t a plan to have any.”
Strome, 28, is slated to be a UFA at the end of the season. He is in the final year of a two-year deal that has a cap hit of $4.5 million and an actual salary of $5 million.
He has 151 points in 202 career games.
The Rangers, as of now, are slated to have $10.6 million in cap space after the season.
1/26/22 | Adam Rotter: It’s no surprise that the Rangers will keep Strome if he isn’t signed. The focus is on the playoffs this year and he is too important to this team to move unless, in some bizarre deal, they are able to get a similar center that is signed at a manageable cap hit.
11/20/21 | Adam Rotter: It isn’t all that surprising that there haven’t been contract talks. It’s still early in the season and at some point, Chris Drury will engage with Strome about what a potential extension would look like, but both sides probably realize that there isn’t going to be enough space to make it work.
Strome will be one of the better offensive free agents this summer and will probably get a deal of at least $6 million per season. That is probably going to be too much for the Rangers. I do expect the Rangers to keep Strome and not move him at the deadline unless they fall far out of the playoff race, but Artemi Panarin is more than likely to have a new center next season.
