- This was certainly an interesting game. I give the Rangers credit for not folding after giving up two goals in the first few minutes, I give credit to Jonny Brodzinski for taking that hook between the legs and then thanks to the Stars for giving the Rangers that PP and for Jake Oettinger not being able to stop a beach ball tonight.
- The Rangers only scored one of their goals on the PP tonight and that is certainly a nice thing to see no matter how poor the Dallas defense played in the first and how Oettinger played all game.
- They were certainly more engaged and worked harder tonight than they did the last two games, but they still gave up too many chances. A number of players stood out, up and down the lineup, just on effort alone and many of them were rewarded with points.
- Igor Shesterkin was, again, not his best self even though three of the four goals were deflected. That first goal is one he never allows, but he was still there at a few key moments to keep the Rangers in the lead.
- So they end the road trip 2-2 and that is fine on paper and in the standings, but I don’t think you can look at tonight’s game and just move past the prior two games. Effortwise they were much better, but effort alone won’t fix the holes on defense, their turnovers and missed coverages. They did beat a good team, came back from down 2-0 goals and scored at 5-on-5, which are all good signs, but they still need to find consistency in beating good teams and scoring at 5-on-5.
- Next up is two at home with the Ducks on Tuesday and the Isles on Thursday. The Ducks are around the playoff race in the West, but on the outside looking in. Then it’s the Islanders and no matter where they are in the standings, that will be a measuring stick game of sorts for the Rangers and then next weekend will be two really great tests in a back-t0-back on the road against Tampa and Carolina.
