The Rangers have signed Julien Gauthier to a one-year, one-way extension worth $800,000. (CapFriendly)

Gauthier was a pending RFA and will be an RFA next summer when this contract expires.

Gauthier reportedly asked for a trade from the Rangers. (The Athletic)

He played in 49 games for the Rangers this season, scoring thrice and adding four assists. He only played in three games after March 15th and didn’t appear in the playoffs.

Adam Rotter: This was a little strange to see since it sure seemed like Gauthier was a definite candidate to be left unqualified and given the chance to play somewhere else. Maybe this was done to include him as an extra piece in some trade or maybe the Rangers think he can be a depth player again. I’d still think that Gauthier is somewhere else when the season starts, but for right now he’s with the Rangers.
