- Well, they ended up needing every one of those six goals.
- At 6-3 it seemed like the right kind of result for the best team in the league against the worst team in the league, but 6-5 is not as nice. The Sharks never let up. They showed why they are last in the league with a lot of their shoddy defensive coverage, but they kept pushing and getting chances. The Rangers seemed to take it easy after the sixth goal, but all the sudden the Sharks were within one. They didn’t get it and the Rangers have won three in a row.
- They continue to win, win in different ways and in different kinds of games, but for the last little while the Rangers have not seemed as strong overall as they did a few weeks ago. No game is going to be perfect, they are going to have lapses and their opponents are trying to win the game as well, but the Rangers haven’t seemed as sure defensively as they had been. Again, you need to win in different ways, in different style games and different opponents, but you’d hope to see them get back to locking things down a bit more.
- What is funny is that I thought that the Rangers were playing a great third period. They had a lead, built on it, limited what San Jose was doing, and seemed like they were going to cruise to a win. The last part of the game with San Jose scoring twice and pushing for the tie doesn’t turn the third period bad, but it just shows that the Rangers need to keep playing to truly lock things down.
- Artemi Panarin continues to be excellent. That is really all you can say. He’s returned to being one of the very best players in the league instead of just one of the best players. He just seems so much more impactful than he had been the last couple of years. He was always putting up points, but he just seems like the difference-maker he was in his first season here.
- I don’t know how long it will last, but the Jonny Brodzinski to the top-six experiment has worked over the last five periods. He’s always seemed like a AAAA player that is great in the AHL and then just a depth player in the NHL, but it’s possible he could be a “third guy” on a line the way that Colin Blackwell and Dryden Hunt were at times and like Jesper Fast was consistently. Maybe things slow down and he goes back to the bottom-six or Hartford, but that spot next to Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad is open and he has a chance to grab it…at least for now.
- It’s very encouraging to see K’Andre Miller starting to score more.
- They head to Ottawa on Tuesday to face the Sens.
