- What a weird, weird game…and a clinched third straight playoff appearance.
- This was just a strange game. The Flyers were better in the first two periods. Then the Rangers started filling the net…and the Flyers kept tying it. The Rangers were not at their best, but they found a way to win and they became the first team to 100 points and first team to clinch a playoff spot.
- They were sloppy and seemed a step slow for the first two periods, but in the third period, they started getting to the net and broke through the frustrating Flyer defense. They also weren’t able to shut things down for Philly in the third period as the Flyers kept tying the game.
- You sort of thought that the two quick goals to give the Rangers the lead to start the third would stop the Flyers, but Philly kept coming and made it a much more stressful and longer game than it likely needed to be.
- They weren’t great tonight, but they won and you move on.
- Other than Jonny Brodzinski, all the goals came from the Rangers most important players. Alexis Lafreniere, Adam Fox, Vincent Trocheck, Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad all had two points and some of those goals came with jumbled up lines.
- Alexis Lafreniere is closing in on 50 points and while that isn’t a ton for a first overall pick in his fourth season, he has been great this season for the Rangers. It’s just such a stark contrast for him from how last season ended and even how training camp and the preseason went. This year is hopefully just the start of many more and better seasons to come.
- It’s not ideal for the Rangers to be down three defenseman, but Ryan Lindgren and Jacob Trouba are skating. I don’t think there is any need to rush them back, but their depth is being tested at the moment.
- The playoffs have seemed like a foregone conclusion since they went 18-4-1 start and while things definitely got shaky in December and January, the playoffs were never really in doubt. First place in the Metro and the Presidents’ Trophy are still up for grabs so the Rangers do have things to keep playing for, but the playoffs are locked in.
- They head out to Colorado on Thursday night.
