Stats:
Adam Rotter:
- Artemi Panarin, and Igor Shesterkin, kept the Rangers Metro Division and Presidents Trophy dreams alive.
- It sure didn’t look like it though. It was a playoff-type game and the Rangers were certainly much better than they were against the Flyers and while it seemed like they controlled a lot of the game, similar to Tuesday night, it just didn’t seem like it was going to be enough. It seemed like the Islanders were winning a few more battles and that they were going to clamp things down to win the Game 2-1.
- It was a game that was going to continue to raise a lot of questions about this Ranger team heading into the playoffs. It would have been three losses in a row, a long stretch without a 5-on-5 goal, and a question about whether the Rangers would be able to turn things back on, in terms of their intensity, desperation and defensive structure, when the playoffs started.
- Those questions still remain to a degree, but Artemi Panarin continued his phenomenal season as the Rangers MVP and scored the tying goal to get the Rangers at least one point. He looks determined to put all those questions about the playoffs behind him.
- Artemi Panarin is only in a position to score the tying goal and the shootout winner because Igor Shesterkin made a number of Top-Level, Grade-A, whatever you want to call them saves. He played the third period like he knew that giving up a third goal was likely a guaranteed loss and he kept the game within reach for Panarin.
- Matt Rempe returned to the lineup and played 5:57 with four hits. Jimmy Vesey played 9:08 at even strength and Barclay Goodrow only played 6:45 at even strength. While the preference would be for the Rangers to be leading and Goodrow likely playing more, he too is likely to see his ice time cut when the Rangers are chasing.
- They host Ottawa on Monday and with a win they will clinch the division and the Presidents Trophy. Then they get a break until the playoffs start on Saturday or Sunday.
