Adam Rotter:
- This was a very pond-hockey type of back and forth game where the Rangers took advantage of Montreal mistakes in the first period, built up a lead and then kept adding to it. Igor Shesterkin still had to be really good because Montreal never stopped coming and creating chances, but the Rangers were able to flex their offensive muscles and overwhelm the Canadiens.
- A monster game for Filip Chytil as he was flying every time he was on the ice. He was probably the Rangers best player and his line, again, was really strong with Kaapo Kakko finally getting his first goal, plus two assists, and Will Cuylle getting two assists. It’s certainly still very early, but this is a game-changing line for the Rangers and shows what they missed with Filip Chytil out and then not at 100% last year.
- Reilly Smith also had a big game, forced a turnover to score his goal and set up Chytil on his first goal. Smith is looking better and better with each game.
- Offensively a lot of the Rangers had strong nights, including Mika Zibanejad ripping a shot home 54 seconds into the game. At times they were just toying with Montreal with some of the puck possession they had and moves they were making. 7 goals seems right, but they did hit 4-5 posts and at least one crossbar and so it could have been more.
- Ryan Lindgren returned tonight and paired with Victor Mancini and it sure seems like Mancini is here to stay. K’Andre Miller stayed with Adam Fox and Braden Schneider stayed with Jacob Trouba and I guess they will stick with it until it stops working.
- They are 5-0-1 through six games and swept their road trip. It’s been a hell of a start for the Rangers, but the Panthers come to MSG on Thursday for an Eastern Conference Finals rematch.
