- A nice win for the Rangers where they, again, played a team in their opener but this was also three in four nights for them. The game may have become a rout had the Rangers second goal in the first period not been disallowed but they hung onto a 1-0 lead and did enough to win against a Detroit team where fans were yelling for them to sell the team.
- The Rangers were very fortunate last week that Dylan Garand was not claimed on waivers but I don’t think they will get that fortunate again. That would mean that the Rangers carry three goalies once Jonas Korpisalo gets healthy or that the Rangers put Korpisalo on waivers. Korpisalo is considered week to week with an injury that is shrouded in some mystery at the moment, so the Rangers have time, but if Garand continues to play well then he’ll make it easy for the Rangers and assume the role of backup goalie.
- Through three games, especially last night and tonight, the Rangers look like the deeper team they were being built to be. The bottom-six has been very effective and Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson have been solid. Durzi has a bit of an edge, moves the puck well and gives the Rangers a real QB on the second PP unit that they have lacked for years.
- Eeli Tolvanan has jumped past Igor Shesterkin, and others, to take the team lead in goals with his empty netter, but he was physical and had a huge blocked shot late in the third period.
- The Rangers play Utah on Sunday at home and the Islanders on Tuesday at home to end a strange 5 games in 8 days to start the season.
