Johnson has been bothered by a lower-body injury for most of the season. David Quinn called him a “warrior” earlier this month for how he played through the injury.

Johnson was placed on waivers earlier this week and is currently on the Rangers taxi squad. He is on a one-year deal and carries a cap hit of $75,000 while on the taxi squad.

The Rangers have not made any announcement about the surgery.

Johnson played in 13 games for the Rangers this season, scoring one goal, 8 PIM, a minus-five rating, and an average of 16:58 per game.
