2020-21 Rangers

Igor Shesterkin starting tonight against the Isles

6:36PM: Kreider will not play tonight. Phil Di Giuseppe will come into the lineup. (MSG)

1:16PM: David Quinn spoke after the morning skate and said (NYR):

  • On the goalie, “it certainly wasn’t an easy decision, but we are going to play Shesterkin. Georgie has a stellar record against the Isles which certainly gives you long pause as to decide who to play. But, Shesty’s play over the last six weeks, I know what his record is against the Islanders, it is a small sample size, we look at the last game we played them as a little bit of an outlier because of the way things unfolded for us. That is what went into the decision making process and you could probably make an argument to play either guy, I just felt that with the direction Shesty’s game is going and the way he played over the last six weeks that he has earned this opportunity.”

  • On Trouba and Kreider, “Trouba is doing well, he’s not going to play tonight but he’s certainly getting close. He is day to day and Kreids was maintenance and he will be a game-time decision.”
  • Is this season a success, “No, our success is going to be determined at the end of the season, the totality of the season. We have a goal and we want to reach it. All our thoughts and focus is on winning tonight and playing well.”
  • How important are these games for the young players, “Very meaningful, we have a lot of young players that are learning how to play playoff-type hockey games, similar to what we went through at the end of last year, the circumstances are different without the crowds, but still, these players are understanding that hockey changes a little at this time of year and every team has to adapt and you get away with less. We are going to continue to learn and we don’t want to learn and lose, we want to win and that is what this is all about.”
  • Do you believe you have a chance at the playoffs as opposed to three games ago, “I think every time you win a game you feel better about your chances and after that loss to Philly we were a little down and deflated, but at the end of the day we needed to pick ourselves up, regroup and be dialed in about the game at hand and that is what we’ve done over the last three games. Has it always been pretty? No, not every game is pretty and you have to find ways to win and our guys have done that. Buffalo and NJ are going to give people trouble moving forward and we’ve won key games against them, that Philly win was a big win to stop the bleeding and reset ourselves and put ourselves in a different mindset and then we win two more and here we are, playing the Islanders and still have a chance.”
  • Would Kravtsov take Kreider’s spot, “When we played the Isles back to back a couple of weeks ago you could argue that our best line was Lafreniere, Chytil and Kakko. These guys have played well against these guys, Kravy has played good games against them. We don’t look at it in that manner, these guys are good players and a key piece to us having success.”
