Updates from Saturday’s morning skate in Monteal

4 PM: Gerard Gallant spoke after the morning skate and said (NYR):

  • Is Chytil centering Panarin and Kakko, “I think so, if that is what you saw out there (laugh).”
  • On Kakko going to PP1, “That is a possibility.”
  • On Alexis Lafreniere’s first game in Montreal, “I didn’t realize that until last night. He’s going to be really excited, obviously a french Canadian player that was the number one overall pick. You can see the jump in his step this morning, hopefully, he has a real good game and I’m sure he’ll play with a lot of emotion.”

  • On what he is seeing from Lafreniere, “he’s still a young, young player and he’s doing things well he’s playing a little bit better defense than he did last year from all the reports that I got, and he’s growing up as a man, t0o. He’s stronger he’s in better shape so he’s doing all the right things and his game is gonna come he’s played better this year and it’s early in the season but we’re happy with him.”
  • On Fox’s ice time, “I think 25 minutes is a fair game for him, I mean the way he skates, smooth, he’s a young player out there so you know, like I said earlier in the year, he’s not gonna play 30 minutes but it’s gonna be a lot of games when he gets to play 25-26 minutes in that area, depends on situations power plays and PK so no we’re not concerned at all.”
  • What do you want to bring tonight, “Well I’d take a lot of the last game into tonight and I’d be real happy, We played real well, we had a lot of scoring chances, created a lot, their goaltender played outstanding, ours was really good too, but for me the difference in that game was that the two goalies in Dallas made some incredible saves and, but I liked the way we played.”
  • On Shesterkin, “he’s a good goalie, I thought it was a good goal, I thought that it might even of gone off our defensemans stick, to be honest with. No, it was a tough goal to go up but again it was a two on one so great shots, great goal.”
  • On Chytil, “Fil’s game is growing. He’s a young player that, a lot of times played in that third line spot, and like I said, if he plays in that spot tonight, take another step. He’s played really well, he had a hat trick in the last exhibition game and played really well the first two games. So young kid, growing and getting better and gets an opportunity to play probably more important minutes in that role.”
  • On Chytil not playing in that role before, “like you said, we’ve got a lot of talented players out there and Fil is, what is he, 21? Not many 21-years olds play top-six, they have to be elite players and Fil is going through that step. It’s one step at a time so you can’t rush people.”
  • Is Strome available for Toronto, “he’s just in Covid protocol and that is all I can say.”
  • On being a young team, “obviously we’re a young team, but we don’t talk about that you know that’s that’s excuses.  Everybody’s happy with your young players’ work ethic and compete level know that there’s going to be some mistakes but I like a young team, a talented team and we’re going to grow as a team we talked about that at training camp, veteran players help our young players out and that’s how you go as a team and, and I want to look at this year I don’t worry about down the road, but we know what we’re going to have down.
