  • Igor Shesterkin is the only reason this game wasn’t over in the second period. He was outstanding. It’s fitting that Henrik Lundqvist was on MSG for this game because he played like this countless times over the years for the Rangers.
  • The Leafs just dominated with puck possession, shots and quality chances. They should have lost this game, but their goaltender kept them in it and got them the two points.
  • It was nice for Artemi Panarin to score and get the winner. He seems to be turning the puck over more than normal, but maybe that has to do with Ryan Strome and Kaapo Kakko not being there.
  • It was also fitting that on a night where they were just BRUTAL on faceoffs that they end up getting the winner off a faceoff play.
  • In general this was another game where the Rangers were sloppy with the puck, sloppy with their assignments and sloppy on the PP. They just don’t have the puck enough to create the offense that the talent on this team warrants. Again, this was only game four, but there just doesn’t seem like there is much structure or system that is anything but relying on the goalie.
  • Barclay Goodrow, so far, reminds me of a fullback or a blocking tight end. He does the things that few people notice well, but once he gets a pass he bobbles or can’t handle it.
  • So the Rangers are 2-0 in Canada to start the year, but they still have a long way to go before they resemble the team that they can and should be. If Igor Shesterkin continues to play this well, Mika Zibanejad continues to put up points and Adam Fox is Adam Fox then the Rangers should pick up wins, but they can’t just rely on those guys and Artemi Panarin. They need to play better overall, they need to focus on racking up shots on goal and not racking up on hits. Hopefully their hit numbers will go down and their shot/goal numbers will go up because they have the puck a lot more.
  • Next up is Nashville, Ottawa on Saturday and then a return to MSG a week from today against Calgary.
