What Gerard Gallant said after the win over Seattle

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the win over Seattle and said (NYR):

  • On Shesterkin, “It’s another night. How many times has he done that? Tw0 or three, for sure. He was outstanding.”
  • How long can Shesterkin keep stealing wins, “Well, what do we have, 70 games? We weren’t good. I thought we came out and played a great first ten minutes, it was a great road period in this building and the next 30 minutes was awful and Igor stole the show again.”

  • Why did it turn against you, “I’d like to know. Did you ask them? We stopped playing, second period was one shot, we lost every faceoff. Disappointing, frustrating, but we found a way and Igor was the main reason.”
  • Was part of it because Fox missed some shifts, “no, nothing to do with it at all. If that is the problem then we got a long way to go as a team.”
  • On scratching Nils Lundkvist, “We just dressed what we thought was our 20 best players…”
  • Was it about getting Tinordi a game, “It’s dressing our 20 best players to win tonight.”
  • Was there anything unique about Seattle, “The first time is always special, it’s a beautiful arena, the crowd is into it, it’s awesome to come in here and see that. It’s really nice to come in and see that. They played a great game tonight, they got no points for it, but they played a great game, they got a good team, Hakstol is doing a great job with them.”
  • On the two many men on the ice penalties, “Obviously we made a great play with Foxy coming off the bench, but they were both the right calls. When a guy is going in on a scoring chance and he comes off the bench you have to call that. I don’t think it was lack of discipline, I think it was….and the other one was a defenseman tryinbyg to change the puck got turned over by our forwards and he went back and the other guy jumped. They happened, we aren’t happy with them, but that is what happens when you turn pucks over in the neutral zone.”
  • On winning when you aren’t happy with how you played, “We talk about it, talk about it between periods. We got two points, and it’s huge and if you l0ok at the standings I’ll feel a lot better tomorrow then I did after the game, but practice? You go over things, try to make your team better, you can’t go out there and skate the guys and kill them and say ‘this is what you get for playing bad hockey,’ we have another game the next night in Vancouver. They came out and responding pretty good in the third period, it wasn’t great, but I thought they competed hard in the third period and played a different game, but we found a way to score a goal and get the empty netter.”
