What Gerard Gallant said after the win over NJ

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the win over NJ and said (MSG, NYR):

  • Do you have an update on Blais, “no, just that he didn’t come back. I don’t know what will take place, but it didn’t look good to me. I don’t know nothing until tomorrow.”
  • What did you think of the play, “It’s a lot like the Reaves one, from what I saw.”

  • On the game, “Jersey is a quick team and they played yesterday too. I thought it was a little bit sloppy at times for both teams, to be honest with you, and then I thought we got some momentum on the PP goal and we lose some momentum when they scored on their PP right after that. It was back and forth, but they are a good team and have defensemen that can move the puck real well and they found the middle of ice a few times on us and that gave us some trouble, for sure.”
  • On Kakko, “the kid has been squeezing his stick a lot, he had a couple of chances to get points in the two prior games, one goal was waved off. The kid played great tonight, he looked like a beast. Real happy with him.”
  • On Lafreniere and confidence, “we worry about that with those young kids. There are 3-4 of them, Chytil, K’Andre Miller, those kids are young kids. You just have to keep playing them, they paid big dividends for us, big goal by Lafreniere tonight. Both of them scored in the shootout, so that was huge for those kids.”
  • On Lafreniere’s ice time from last night to tonight, “it was more the flow of the game, we play back to back and I want to get him out there more. I think he’s a good player and they’ve had a little bit of struggles defensively at times, but they are going to be good players for us and if they can do what they did tonight that is really going to help our team.”
  • How much do you need them to progress, “they are going to progress, no doubt about that. We have to have patience like we did, Kakko looked like a great player out there tonight. The kids are trying and working hard and he scored a huge goal, made some really good plays, scored in the shootout, so he’s feeling really good about himself. They are young kids and getting better every game and just keep working hard.”
  • Did you know Kreider hadn’t been in a shootout in eight years, “To be honest with you, he was hiding at the end of the bench. Kreids is great, he’s a confident player right now, he hasn’t gone in eight years….Foxy was up next too and he was sort of hiding in the back.”
  • Do you talk to players about if they want to go in the shootout, “no, if it goes down to the end you are peeking over their shoulder and saying ‘who,’ but I’ve been involved in the longest shootout ever against Washington, I think we had 22-guys go and the guys you didn’t think were going to score, scored in the shoout. It’s fun…they are fun when you win.”
  • On the 3 on 3 overtime, “we had real good chances, we gave up a couple of good ones. I thought Jersey controlled the puck quite a bit, but we had the better chances.”
  • On Georgiev, “he was good, solid. I thought it wasn’t a high pace game, sort of back and forth, they get 4-5 chances, we go down and get two. I thought he was solid and looked good, made some big saves, a huge glove save when it was 2-1.”
  • On Georgiev and confidence, “I hope he’s a confident kid, it’s the way goaltending is. You get on a roll and we are trying to win games and have 23-guys we are trying to manage the best we can. Back to back games, he played well, he was solid and that is the way it’s going to be, so we will see when the next start is going to be and decide on our goaltending. It’s all about team winning and right now we are winning. I like both of them, I said that from day one. Shesty went to a different level there, but it’s a long year.”
