Adam Rotter:

  • Igor Shesterkin was so close to scoring into the empty net, but unfortunately, he will have to settle for another phenomenal performance in a win.
  • I thought this was a pretty evenish game with the Rangers and Senators sort of alternating strong shifts every few minutes. The Rangers were a little better and that was all that mattered, especially against a depleted Senators team that struggles to complete passes and was playing their sixth game in ten days or something.
  • The PP comes up big again with the game-winner off a terrific shot from Artemi Panarin.
  • Defensively the Rangers were pretty strong in front of Igor Shesterkin.
  • I was hoping that the Rangers would go into Ottawa tonight, score a couple early and then just control the rest against a struggling team playing the second half of a back to back, but this game was like so many others this season. They were good enough to win and were able to do so because of their PP and their goalie.
  • We will start to see how good these Rangers are and how well they match up to their competition starting this week with games against the Caps, Pens, and 5 of their next nine against playoff teams and three of those nine against teams just outside of the playoffs. Maybe the Rangers will still be able to win games playing the way they are and relying on their PP, goalie, and a belief that their talent will ultimately break- through, or maybe the issues the Rangers have had most of this season against top teams will return. The time has come for the Rangers to show they can compete for 60-minutes with top teams.
  • The first three of those nine start on Thursday with the Caps at MSG, their first game against the Pens on Saturday and Vancouver coming to MSG a week from tonight.
