3/18/22 | 8:50PM: Arthur Staple writes that the Rangers and Coyotes had a deal for Georgiev in December that would have netted the Rangers a “low-level goalie prospect” before Igor Shesterkin was hurt. (The Athletic)
1PM: Frank Seravalli said “there are a lot of things to unpack with Georgiev. I think teams have been really concerned about his body language, his commitment, I guess. They feel he has been or outwardly been selfish, I think there has been talk about what he’s been like in the Rangers dressing room that has hurt his trade stock. The Rangers are actively trying to move him. What can they get for him? It’s probably a late round pick at this time, I’m thinking fourth. If Alex Nedeljkovic went for a third and Georgiev hasn’t been as good and there is baggage and he’s not coming back, the Rangers don’t have a lot of leverage. Vegas is a real strong possibility, I think.” (Daily Faceoff)
3/17/22 | 3:24 PM: Emily Kaplan said on ESPN that Georgiev’s agent change should “get things going, but there is still a belief that this could resolve itself over the summer because the Rangers want him backing up Igor Shesterkin for the rest of the year.
3/12/22 | Emily Kaplan says that Georgiev “a player many expect to be moved” by the trade deadline has switched agents.
3/2/22 | Georgiev is ranked 8th on TSN’s Trade Bait list. He was also ranked 8th on the 2/23 version of the list.
2/28/22 | On the After The Whistle Podcast, Elliotte Friedman was asked if Alex Georgiev could be a fit with the Oilers and said “I think he is a possibility, yes, but the Rangers are asking quite a bit for him and I think that makes it a little bit harder. Also, don’t forget, the Rangers are trying to win the Stanley Cup this year so they aren’t going to trade Georgiev unless they have another option in goal.”
2/18/22 | In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that since Alex Georgiev is unlikely to be qualified in the offseason, allowing him to become a free agent, the trade deadline is the last opportunity for the Rangers to get something in return for Georgiev.
He notes that the Rangers would need to get a veteran backup to replace Georgiev with Detroit’s Thomas Greiss and Vancouver’s Jaro Halak as possible candidates. (NY Post)
Arthur Staple writes at The Athletic that the Rangers have not gotten “any real offers” for Georgiev all season.
Frank Seravalli listed Georgiev 14th on his Trade Board and said that Vegas inquired about Georgiev. (Daily Faceoff)
Since Georgiev won three in a row while Igor Shesterkin was hurt, Georgiev is 2-6-1 with a save percentage of .900.
Adam Rotter: The risk in qualifying Georgiev is that he might take it and the Rangers would be on the hook for $2.6 million and a player they no longer want or trust. He could be a throw-in as part of another trade at the draft, but it seems like the idea of getting anything of real value for Georgiev has long since passed.
For a while I thought the idea of trading Georgiev was crazy because he was too valuable to the Rangers as the back up to Igor Shesterkin. Since then he has struggled and if he doesn’t pick up his game in the next month then I think the Rangers might need to consider going for someone like Greiss, Halak, maybe Braden Holtby if Dallas wants to move him or Anton Forsberg from Ottawa.
The Rangers have a few more back-to-backs and play basically every other night in March so two goalies are going to be needed both to give Igor Shesterkin a rest and to maintain whatever seed they are in the playoffs. I think the Rangers would prefer to keep Georgiev, have him play well and worry about his future in the offseason, but if he struggles then they may have to make a move away from him.
