  • A lot of this was a throwback game to earlier in the season where the Rangers struggled defensively, gave up a ton of chances, were saved by Igor Shesterkin, the PP got the winner and they found a way to win.
  • The Rangers are still playing for first place, but this was another one of those games that they just needed to get through. Again, like so many of the Rangers other wins this season, it was sort of a game where the Rangers were good for 30 minutes and not so good for 30 minutes. Winnipeg certainly had long stretches of quality chance after quality chance, but Igor Shesterkin was there to either keep the game scoreless or keep the Rangers in the lead. This game could have easily turned into one of those games from a few weeks ago when the Ranger were struggling against the teams below them in the standings, but Shesterkin made all the saves.
  • I thought that Alex Georgiev might get tonight’s game, but after Shesterkin wasn’t tested all that much against Detroit they probably figured he was fresh enough for tonight. He was terrific and I wonder how many of the final five games he will get? I guess it’s possible that he gets all four, outside of the second half of the back-to-back against Montreal next week, especially if they are really set on going for first place. My guess is that Georgiev goes on Thursday and Shesterkin goes on Saturday in Boston.
  • The Rangers are once again tied for first place and both teams are even in games played. Carolina has the tiebreakers so the Ranger are going to jump over the Hurricanes if they want to win the division.
  • Next up is the first of three good tests for the Rangers against the Islanders, Bruins and then the Hurricanes. The Islanders aren’t a playoff team, but they beat the Rangers badly a few weeks ago and their defensive/playoff-style structure will be good for the Rangers to play against.
