What Gerard Gallant said after the win over Winnipeg

Gerard Gallant met with the media following the win over Winnipeg and said (NYR, MSG):

  • Do you want to save some of those shutouts for the playoffs, (Laugh) “No kidding. It was nice to see happen. He earned that shutout tonight, he played really well, made some key saves at key times, for sure.”
  • On Shesterkin’s play recently, “It’s been 90% of the season that he’s played like that. He had one little downturn where he wasn’t Shesterkin-like, but he’s been outstanding and it’s good to see Georgie get involved in the shutouts, too and the goaltending has been real good lately for us lately, real strong. It’s great to see them get rewarded when they play like that.”

  • On getting to 50 wins, “As a coach you never come in here and say that 50 wins would be a great season for us. You take it one game at a time and that is how we do things. It’s huge, great to see. I don’t think they’ve done it too many times here, five, what does that say? It’s been a real good year and a lot of fun and we’ve got five games left and hopefully build on that and keep playing well. We know, it’s great to have a great regular season like we’re having, but it’s all about the next season. We just want to keep playing well and go one game at a time and go from there.”
  • Is finishing in 1st place important, “I just want to play well. Wherever we finish, we finish. Would you like to finish first? Everybody tries to finish first, but you play the game, see where we go and see how good we play and make sure we are ready for the playoffs. It’s definitely a goal, we want to finish first, but we’re not going to go crazy to finish first, we’re gonna play our game and take it one game at a time and see what happens.”
  • On the team defense overall, “Tonight was a little loose in that second period, but overall we played really good team defense and that makes a difference in our team. It’s not just the last three games and the shutouts, it’s been the last number of games where we’re playing a lot better defensively and it makes you feel more confident as a coach that you are not just winning because of your goaltending. We played good hockey the last number of games and have a good record the last 20-25 games. I think it’s more to do with our team, tonight he really earned that shutout, but our team has played a lot better defensive hockey, there is no doubt.”
