  • These thoughts looked a whole lot different after the first period. It seemed like it was over. They had a terrible first period, were down 2-0 and the Kid Line was still their best line.
  • Then the big guys showed up. It took until 5 minutes into the second period of Game Six, but Mika Zibanejad turned into Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers were waiting for someone to take charge and the guy who is arguably their best player, arguably should be their Captain and who was signed to an eight-year deal stepped up and scored twice, hit the post on shorthanded breakaway and then took Igor Shesterkin’s incredible pass to the net and then Chris Kreider finished to give the Rangers the lead. The Pens tied it, of course, but those two became difference-makers again and then they combined on the winner.
  • Igor Shesterkin was very good and Adam Fox had a terrific game with four assists. Those two have been waiting for other big guys to step up throughout the series and they finally had company tonight.
  • The Rangers finally got their Louis Domingue break on the winner. That is why they need to shoot more and go to the net against him. It wouldn’t be a shock if the Penguins turn to their #1 and a returning Tristan Jarry for Game 7. It’s a risk for them to bring in a pretty cold goalie for the first time in weeks at the biggest moment of the year, but I think it would be hard for the Penguins to go back to Domingue.
  • There is also the Sidney Crosby factor and it’s not a huge surprise that Zibanejad stepped up in a big way with Crosby out. He supposedly has a concussion and with his history of concussions I don’t think the Penguins will risk anything, but he’s going to push like crazy to get back in. The Penguins may be dejected now, but you can see them come to Game 7 a lot more confident if Crosby gets back in.
  • It’s the playoffs and ultimately it doesn’t matter how you win, just that you do win, but the Rangers sure like making it hard for themselves. A lot of what plagued the Rangers this season, giving up tons of shots and not being able to play 60 minutes, has been present this season, but so has one other thing: winning. Again, you hope to see them play a structured, complete effort, but in the playoffs you find a way and you take it.
  • Tyler Motte had a big impact on the game and not just his role in the winning goal. With him back and Justin Braun playing instead of Patrik Nemeth, all four of the deadline guys are in and playing the roles they were acquired for.
  • There is one more big guy that needs to be heard from. Game 7 is Artemi Panarin’s turn to really make his mark on the series.
  • Sunday is Game 7. At so many different points in the past week it seemed like that would just be a dream, but now it’s reality.
