2023-24 Training Camp

Rangers make seven more cuts

The Rangers have sent Brett Berard, Dylan Garand, Adam Edstrom, Jake Leschyshyn, Matt Rempe, Matthew Robertson, and Brandon Scanlin down to Hartford and placed Louis Domingue and Mac Hollowell on waivers.

If/when Domingue and Hollowell clear waivers then the Rangers will be down to 25 players in camp:

Forwards (15): Nick Bonino, Jonny Brodzinski, Filip Chytil, Will Cuylle, Barclay Goodrow, Kaapo Kakko, Chris Kreider, Alexis Lafreniere, Brennan Othmann, Artemi Panarin, Tyler Pitlick, Vincent Trocheck, Jimmy Vesey, Blake Wheeler, Mika Zibanejad

Defensemen (8): Adam Fox, Erik Gustafsson, Ben Harpur, Zac Jones, Ryan Lindgren, K’Andre Miller, Braden Schneider, Jacob Trouba

Goaltenders (2): Jonathan Quick, Igor Shesterkin

Adam Rotter: None of this is surprising, though I was hoping Rempe would stay up for at least another game or so. On defense, it is basically a question of if they will carry 8 or place Harpur on waivers with the intent of sending him down. The Rangers did the same last year with Jarred Tinordi, thinking that he would go unclaimed, and the Blackhawks picked him up. They already lost Ty Emberson on waivers and while I thinkHarpur would clear, losing him would be another blow to the defensive depth.

Will Cuylle and Brennan Othmann will both get more opportunity to try and make the team and Jonny Brodzinski and Tyler Pitlick are also battling for spots. They could keep both Pitlick and Brodzinski, with one on the fourth line and one as the spare. They could pick one from Othmann and Cuylle and one from Brodzinski and Pitlick and split like that. It’s not impossible that they only go with 12 forwards, no spares, if they decide to stick with eight defenemen. They have also have to factor in the cap and how every dollar saved could end up being important around the trade deadline.
