- One win away from the second round.
- This wasn’t the Rangers at their best, but it was Igor Shesterkin at his best. He gave up a knuckler in the first but he was excellent the rest of the way and made numerous Grade A saves to keep the Rangers in the lead.
- Special teams were big for the Rangers as the PP scored and the PK went 6-6 and had a shorthanded goal. They can’t keep taking, or at least get called for, six penalties a game.
- Vincent Trocheck was excellent tonight and the stat sheet says he played close to 25 minutes. He scored, was 75% on faceoffs and is a key penalty killer. K’Andre MIller had six hits and a lot of time on the PK and Jacob Trouba had 8 blocks in all that PK time.
- This was sort of a game out of two seasons ago with how good Shesterkin was and how good the special teams were to lead them.
- The Caps have not been pushovers and have made it tough at times for the Rangers, but it’s not a big surprise that it’s 3-0. The Caps are missing half of their defense and they certainly don’t have the firepower they used to, but there are areas the Rangers need to clean up for Game 4 and, likely, the next round.
- They can close things out and move on to Round 2 on Sunday. It’s not a must-win, but a sweep not only gives them some extra rest, but it takes out the risk of injury that comes with playing more games.
