Elliotte Friedman said on 32 Thoughts that the Rangers and Alexis Lafreniere have had discussions about a contract extension but he’s getting “mixed messages” about where exactly those talks are.
Frank Seravalli said on Thursday that the Rangers and Lafreniere made “some pretty significant progress over the summer” and that talks are “ongoing.”
He said that the discussions have been around 8-years and around $8 million plus per season. He said that there are different options on the table and that the cap hit won’t be under $7 million “depending on what that term is.”
Adam Rotter: 8×8 seems like the ballpark for Lafreniere based around what some other similar players have signed for lately, but it’s hard to imagine that they do this deal before Igor Shesterkin’s deal is in place. The hope was that Shesterkin’s deal would have gotten done over the summer and the Rangers could then work on extending Lafreniere and K’Andre Miller, but Shesterkin remains unsigned and while that doesn’t preclude the Rangers from signing Lafreniere now, knowing for sure what Shesterkin’s number is going to be helps make for a clearer picture.
