5/30/25 : Friedman said on The Fan Hockey show on Friday that he was told “The Rangers, after the year they just had, they are considering everything. I think Chris Drury just wants to know what is the market for his guys. I think the other thing is, it’s kind of been hinted to me that I don’t know if the Rangers are interested in a long-term commitment right now with him, another team told me that. I think that is why his name is kind of out there, they are looking to see what the market is for him and he’s not the only guy.”
5/28/25: Elliotte Friedman said this morning on 32 Thoughts that while it’s not a guarantee he’ll be moved, the Rangers are “testing the market” on K’Andre Miller.’
Friedman added “his name is definitely out there.”
Miller is an RFA this summer.
Adam Rotter: Unless Chris Drury has made up his mind and he doesn’t feel Miller is part of the future, I think you have to give him another crack at seeing if he can realize more of his potential consistently under Mike Sullivan and whoever is going to be in charge of the Rangers defense. But you still need to know what is out there in a potential trade and that seems to be what they are doing.
Miller has either plateaued or regressed over the last two years and that is why his future with the Rangers is even in question. His play over the last two seasons is also what makes his trade value hard to quantify. I’d guess that Chris Drury has a value set that is based more on Miller’s potential and I’d guess that most teams have a value set more on the reality of the last two seasons. Miller would still net a good return in a trade but probably not up to the level that Chris Drury probably has in mind.
But it really comes down to whether the Rangers believe K’Andre Miller has more value to them on the left side of their defense or if the return in a trade is more valuable. The Rangers would still need to find a replacement for Miller and moving him wouldn’t clear any additional cap space since he currently doesn’t have a contract. I think that unless the Rangers get bowled over with an offer of picks and/or prospects they can’t turn down, that the right move is probably trying to get short-term with Miller, possibly walking him to free agency in two years, and kicking the ultimate decision into the future. Adam Fox needs a partner and unless they decide to shift Braden Schneider to the left side, Miller is as good of an option as they have or that they can possibly get without trading other assets to get that player. They could still decide to sign Miller long-term and assume more risk, but also bring the cost certainty that a short-term deal wouldn’t bring.
