Conor Sheary has signed a one-year, two-way contract for the league minimum with the Rangers after coming to training camp on a PTO.
Adam Rotter: I don’t think it was a lock that Sheary was going to make the team when training camp started but as the preseason went on, and certainly after Brennan Othmann and Gabe Perreault were sent down, it seemed like he was going to take that one available forward spot on the third line. I would have preferred that Othmann or Brett Berard get that spot but Sheary, at least to start the year, will get an opportunity to show if he can still play in the NHL. This doesn’t mean that Sheary will still be on the team as the season goes on, especially since he’s on a two-way contract, but he’ll be in there tomorrow night against the Penguins.
I think there is definitely a world where Sheary starts off the season strong, puts up some points and then slows down considerably as the season goes on. He is then replaced at some point by either Brett Berard, Brennan Othmann or if the Rangers are struggling to score, Gabe Perreault. He’s a veteran, a Stanley Cup winner and an energy player, so there is benefit to having him around, and maybe he does have a career resurgence, but I think it’s more than likely that by mid-season Sheary is anywhere from a 13th forward, to Hartford to playing on another team and his spot. I also think it’s possible, since it seems like Noah Laba is making the team, that Sheary, Juuso Parssinen and Jonny Brodzinski have some sort of rotation as spare forwards that get into the lineup from time to time.
