The Rangers have acquired goalie Joonas Korpisalo from Boston for a 2028 4th rounder and prospect Kalle Vaisanen.
Korpisalo, 32, has two more years left on his contract at $4 million per season.
He was 14-9-6 in Boston last season and 140-126-38 in his career.
Adam Rotter: A little bit of a strange move. You don’t want to just give Dylan Garand the back-up job without any competition, but Korpisalo is a real back up goalie. He’s not a Louis Domingue-type AHL/NHL tweener, Korpisalo has been in the league for 11 years and a decent goalie. He’s also signed for two-years at $4 million per season and while the Rangers would get some salary relief if they put him on waivers and he went to Hartford, you’d think that he’s going to come to training camp with a leg up on Garand.
It’s unlikely because it’s not totally necessary, but the Rangers could carry three goalies. There is speculation that more teams may do that, especially if they don’t want to lose someone on waivers and Garand has to go on waivers to go back to Hartford. I don’t think it’s the best idea but it is something they can consider.
