Adam Rotter:
- This was embarrassing and definitely a familiar scene to Peter Laviolette and Artemi Panarin. It’s sure starting to look like the start of the season was the aberration and what we have seen over the last few games is who this team really is.
- After huge stretches of the last two games where the Rangers deviated very far from the style and system that they need to play to win, they returned home and just continued to play a losing brand of hockey. The structure was gone, the will to win puck battles and win races to pucks was gone and they let a team that had two wins, struggled to score and is consistently outshot badly look like a dominant offensive team.
- Then there was the decision to start James Reimer. Understanding that Dylan Garand is probably on fumes, it still seemed like this was his game to start, Reimer could back up and then practice all week and start a game next week. Instead the Rangers went to Reimer and he gave up goals on his first two shots, a third late in the period and then got pulled.
- Maybe the hope in going to Reimer would be in indication to the players in front of him that they needed to bear down more and get back to defending. That didn’t work and while pulling him was likely an attempt at a last gasp to stop the bleeding and change things up, that also didn’t work as LA scored on their first shot against Garand and twice more though one was called back. As much as the goalies struggled, the Rangers really didn’t give them much help either.
- They just let the Kings dictate everything. They were chasing the game against and struggled so much to make passes and possess the puck.
- It was just a terrible performance and now they have until Sunday to stew over this and regroup. The problem is that the Oilers and Connor McDavid are coming on Sunday and even if the Rangers get buttoned up defensively they will face a major test.
