  • Tonight looked a lot more like what many expected from the Rangers this season. It was such a stark contrast to how the Rangers have played most of this season. The Rangers weren’t nearly as sharp as they have been and played their first defense optional game of the season. They just weren’t on the same page all night. Much like how Tuesday was a total team win, this seemed like a total team loss.
  • The game was well out of hand but you have to hope that his deflection in the third period will get Pavel Dorofeyev going. It was a really nice deflection, not one where he ripped the puck past the goalie, but a goal is a goal and the Rangers need him to start a hot streak. I’m not sure I love him in the bumper position, or that Mika Zibanejad is down at the goal line and JT Miller is where Zibanejad should be in a shooting position, but they seem to still be in a trial and error phase with PP1.
  • I wasn’t shocked that Cole Beudoin was sent down and Justin Downling was recalled. Beudoin needs to play and while Gabe Perreault didn’t start last season with the Rangers, he was up and down a bit before coming up and staying up. I’d expect him back in a few weeks to see how much progress he’s made.
  • This was a stinker, a game straight out of last season, but the only question that matters is how will they respond on Saturday? I’m not sure that the Rangers, especially without Igor Shesterkin, are as good as they have shown so far but they are also not as bad as they played tonight. The Rangers need to play a very specific style and structure and they were very far from that tonight.
  • They play Columbus on Saturday.
